Fashion Diary: Columbia City, Seattle

I don’t think it’s a big secret: I love living in Seattle. While it may rain a lot, what we don’t tell you about is our beautiful summers and the mild year round temperatures. For those that don’t love temperature extremes, welcome. You’re one of us.

The vibe of Seattle is casual, comfortable, and quirky: We don’t get dressed up often. We don’t expect you to dress up ever if you don’t want to. But don’t get me wrong – Seattle cares about style, even if it may not always be in fashion. We have the 90s grunge look down pat and have for years thanks to Pearl Jam and Nirvana who added to our already famous music scene. (Jimi Hendrix also grew up here! A park in his memory is over in the Central District.) And while some may be known for rocking socks with sandals, shorts year round, and the cold months often become a sea of North Face Fleece Jackets, some of us prefer to keep up with the latest trends. Or beat to their drum completely, whatever.

We also have a vibrant community of fashion designers and artists. While people may not fly into peacock like they do for NYFW, we do have our own Seattle and Bellevue fashion weeks and many fashion and design related events year round. And, the blogger community in Seattle is always working hard to show that Seattle has style too.

Fashion Diary: Columbia City, Seattle

I get asked all the time to share some of my favorite places or to recommend places for travelers to visit when they come to Seattle. So today, I thought I’d focus on one neighborhood that is a hidden gem and becoming very popular for locals to move into: Columbia City.

3 DIY Hacks to Make Thrift Store Finds Your Own + Giveaway

I’m not sure if I’ve ever shared this before, but I have a pretty extensive crafting history. I think it is what led me to want to be a fashion designer at one point in my young adulthood. And my addiction to clothing definitely helped things too. Luckily, in my teens, I discovered the magic of the thrift store finds and ways to repurpose those finds.

Let’s throw it back though to the good old days of my youth. The first “craft” I learned was sewing, which j can thank my mom for. She quilted for years before I was born, and continued quilting throughout my childhood. I even won a blue ribbon at the state fair for one of my quilts! (#NerdAlert ;) ) I then used crafting to make money in my tween years. I made jewelry and beaded crafts and sold them at various craft shows and bazaars. (Do they still have these anymore?!)

Finally, in my teens, one of my favorite ways to spend a weekend was going thrifting for clothes, bringing them home, and reimagine them into an entirely new garment. I would convert men’s t-shirts to dresses with my own custom graphics. I took ugly tote bags and covered them up with fabric and stenciled whatever I wanted on top. I would cut off the tops of t-shirts to make them off the shoulder or add a completely different fabric up the sides for contrast. You name it; I probably tried it.

It’s been a long time since I have done any of these kinds of projects, so I thought it was about time I tried it again to see if I still could. Well, I did and I can. So I thought I’d share my three easy DIY hacks so you too can refashion your thrift store finds into something totally your own!

15 Things To Do Before Summer is Officially Over

I know I’m not the only one in total and complete shock that September is here already, and not only that, but here in Seattle, fall weather has appeared to arrive with it. As much as I love the fall season and all of the great things that come with it (namely Pumpkin Spice everything, hot apple cider, Halloween, and fall fashion), I’m not sure that I’m ready for summer to be over  with.

With that said, I thought it would be fun to share a few things that are still on my list to complete before summer is officially over. (You and I still have time; fall officially begins September 22nd!)

1. Take a hike

Is there anything better than packing up the dog and going out and enjoying nature together? I think not.

9 Steps to Make Lips Look Bigger + Giveaway

I’m pretty sure you can’t say anything about big lips these days without someone mentioning Kylie Jenner. Let’s be honest, that girl is the queen of the lips these days, from her lip fillers to her lip kits that seemingly are always sold out. And while I will probably never have lips like hers (after all, most including her will have to pay to have them look like that) I can most definitely fake that look with a few beauty hacks that I’ve picked up over the years.

Stitch Fix September 2016 Review

Happy September! I can’t believe how fast this summer has gone. As I write this, I hear rain pouring outside which means that Fall is most definitely on its way. Makes me a little sad, but at the same time, fall is most definitely my favorite fashion season so I guess I can look forward to that. Well, and Pumpkin Spice Lattes too. I do have a soft spot for those.

Stitch Fix September 2016 Review

With all of that said, the beginning of a new month always brings me a new Stitch Fix package on my doorstep. It’s always fun to see what my stylist, Lucy, has picked out for me. This month I couldn’t think of anything, in particular, I had to have, so I let her decide what to send me. If you’re new to Stitch Fix, Stitch Fix is a clothing subscription service that you schedule when you want to. For a $20 styling fee (that you can use towards anything in your “Fix”) you’ll receive a box of handpicked clothing, shoes, accessories, or handbags. Pin to your Pinterest board, leave a note for your stylist of what you’re looking for and fill out your style profile to get the best possible results. It sometimes takes a few tries for your stylist to get your preferences and fit, but when they do, you will love it.
