The textures of fall and winter fashion are my favorite. From snuggly Sherpa to fuzzy faux fur, the comfort factor of these fun textured pieces makes them a wardrobe staple. But what about some of the other textures that are gaining popularity? From suede to velvet to chunky knits, the options are endless. My personal favorite as of late is velvet, and today I’ll be sharing how to wear velvet this holiday season.

How to Wear the Velvet Trend this Holiday Season
Select a Style that Works For You
Velvet comes in all shapes and sizes, and by that I mean you can find velvet pants, velvet dresses, velvet blazers, velvet tops, even velvet accessories like clutches and crossbody bags. If the idea of adding the texture into your wardrobe gives you pause, maybe try an accessory first, see how you like it, then consider adding a more statement piece like a blazer or dress. Shop some of my favorite pieces to fit all budgets below!
Pick a Festive Color
To ensure your piece works for the holiday season, go for a festive color! My personal favorite that is both appropriate for the holidays and also for most any other time of year is burgundy. The color is vibrant and bold, while still working with many other colors like pink, navy, and black. Other great options would be a dark forest green or bright red. For New Year’s outfits, pinks and silvers work well!
Pair it with Another Texture
For all the winter vibes, pair your new velvet find with another favorite texture. In my case, I opted to match my velvet midi dress with this adorable chevron faux fur cape I picked up last holiday season. I love how the colors, while not exact matches, pair well with my pink pumps and make the burgundy tones in my outfit really pop. Plus, faux fur in funky colors is just plain fun!
Go for a Flattering Cut (to leave room for the holiday splurges, obviously)
Let’s be honest, when the holidays roll around no one is saying no to extra ham, a generous helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, or passing up on the treat tables. At least this girl isn’t, which is why a flattering cut of any trendy piece is essential. I personally don’t like to worry whether something is looking a bit too tight, or is cut a bit too short, especially at family gatherings, so finding the right garment is important. When shopping, I wanted to find a velvet dress that would keep me somewhat warm (so even though it is a strappy tank style dress, it has a longer length) and that I could layer to dress it down. I also didn’t want something bodycon as I wanted room to layer and for food babies at holiday parties. This dress was perfect – it offered a fitted top while flaring out at the waist.
Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize
When trying a new trend, always be prepared to wear other items in your outfit that you love. For me, that is always tried and true accessories. A couple of rings and my favorite bag help me feel more comfortable and confident, even if the rest of my outfit doesn’t!
I hope these tips will help you rock the velvet trend both this holiday season and all winter long. Once you’ve found the perfect piece, or pieces if you’re really into velvet, I know you’ll be glad you gave the trend a try.
Do you own any velvet pieces yet? How do you like to style it? I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the velvet trend in the comments!
The layering in this outfit is so dreamy!! As someone who owns no velvet pieces (yet), this is such a great combo to aspire to!
