Happy December! Anyone else totally not prepared for it to be the last month of the year?! I feel like every month of 2017 just flew right on by and while I look forward to what 2018 will bring, I wouldn’t mind if the holidays came just a teensy bit slower.

But, since I can’t control time, the best I can do is to just go with it. For me, that means it’s time to embrace the impending holidays and start sharing some holiday outfits! Today, I’ve taken a little twist on the little black dress, the little black cape dress, and styled it with a few simple pieces that you probably already have in your closet.

While there seems to be a constant pressure to always buy more and more, sometimes the best outfits are the most simple ones. Take your favorite little black dress this holiday season and see if you can style it in a way that makes it feel totally fresh and new. Not sure how to get started? No worries, I have some suggestions for you too!
Put some (faux) fur on it
This time of year is the perfect time to pull out the (faux) fur. Whether its a colorful jacket, oversized coat, printer fur, or an accent piece like a scarf, the options are endless. Beyond adding some interest, it can also add some warmth to an otherwise chilly day. Win-win!
Add a statement piece of jewelry
When thinking about how to style your dress, accessorizing is key. While I’m not the biggest fan of big, chunky jewelry, a piece that stands out is a great one to make an otherwise simple dress really pop! I love this choker from X for that reason. The sparkle makes it feel very Holiday-appropriate without being too over the top.
Pick a fun pair of shoes
Adding prints or textures by way of shoe choice is also a great way to dress up a little black dress. These printed pumps were a Target designer collaboration score (and are surprisingly fairly comfortable!). You don’t have to go too crazy either. These subtly textured pumps, for example, could be a great inexpensive option. Or you can go really wild with a pair of sock booties like mine from Steve Madden. It’s all up to you!
Style it up with your favorite bag
An interesting bag is also a great way to transform your LBD. Want to funk it up? Pick out a bag that makes you say wow. Want to look super chic? Pick a black bag. My convertible clutch from GiGi New York is a favorite because it’s both form and function. A subtle texture makes it interesting but it is black and has a crossbody strap tucked inside for convenience and simplicity.
Update your little black dress to something new
Bored of your LBD? I totally get it. I recently cleaned out my closet and ran across one I purchased, about 5 years ago, that still has the tags on it. Why haven’t I worn it? I’ve sure had tons of opportunities. When thinking about it, I realized I just didn’t love it. There’s nothing interesting about it. It’s a plain sheath dress, and it just isn’t me. So I let it go and am only trying to add basics, no matter how boring, to my closet that I truly love and will wear again and again. It’s okay to realize that pieces in your closet don’t serve you, no matter how much others tell you they should, and to find something that you love more.
I hope this post gives you a little inspiration to dig into your closet and find that old little black dress and restyle it for the holidays this year! There are so many fun ways to change up your look, no matter how “plain Jane” the dress is. From accessories to faux fur and beyond, I can’t wait to see how you style your LBD!
Do you have a LBD that could use a little love? How are you going to style it this holiday season? I’d love to hear about it below!
Giiirl, at first glance, I thought you made it to Portland! This looks almost exactly like Dossier’s facade! Hahaha! I’m loving the cape-like “sleeves”—so chic yet still sophisticated!
Very similar! These photos were from NYC. :) Hoping to get back to visit Portland in 2018 though!
