Rain, Rain Go Away // Rainy Day Outfits

You know what they say… April showers bring May Flowers, and that’s most definitely been true lately here in Seattle. It seems we get several days of absolutely gorgeous weather, and then boom, another rainstorm. I hate to complain, because the rain is great for the environment, but can’t a girl get a little warm weather?!

I have a feeling this rainy spring weather is the reason why Seattle gets a bad rap for how we dress. When it’s drizzly, we often opt for hoods over umbrellas and let’s be honest; hooded coats often aren’t the most stylish. Regardless, I don’t think rainy weather should be any excuse for dressing sloppily. I mean, have you seen rain boots these days?! With so many cute patterns, prints, and colors to choose from, rainy day outfits can most definitely still be stylish.

Find the right rain boots

The key to any cute rainy day outfit, in my humble opinion, is a cute rain boot. From local Seattle-based Washington Shoe Company comes Chooka Boots and Western Chief. From duck boots to rubber ankle boots to rain boots with edgy details like laces, there is a style for everyone.

For those that love a little pop of color, Hunter Boots and Joules Boots are both excellent options. Ringing in at a bit more, you’ll be paying for boots that will last for years and years. Hunter Boots seem always to be popular with the Instagram crowd, and it never ceases to make me giggle when I see girls rocking them in the Florida heat. You do you, girl.

It’s well known in Seattle to not bother with an umbrella. If you do, it’s easy to spot a tourist. The exact reasoning is unknown, but I would guess that it’s because umbrellas are incredibly ineffective in the wind (which often comes with our rain storms) and often the umbrellas you see are too flimsy to do much good.

Instead, my pick for rainy weather would be a jacket with a hood. My personal favorite are short trench coats, and I found the perfect one for Petites at Nordstrom from Ellen Tracy. If you’re taller, opt for a classic trench with a removable hood for double duty in the spring,

Not into hoods? That’s alright too. Rock a hat instead! My favorite go-to for rainy weather is a hat with some substance, and this wool fedora from Topshop does the trick.

When it’s rainy, you might as well have fun with it! For me, that means a pair of boot socks with embellishments. The pointelle lace trim boot socks that I’m wearing are from Kensie that I picked up at Fred Meyer, but you can find socks like this in all shapes, colors, and patterns!

Speaking of patterns, I love wearing fun pieces when the weather is feeling gray and yuck. Going for this gingham shirt dress from J.Jill in this look was a no-brainer. It was easy to layer under my jacket, and the pattern is a fun nod to spring.

Overall if I’ve learned anything from living in a rainy climate, it’s that dreary weather can most definitely affect your mood. The easiest way to turn it around, for me anyway, is to create an outfit I love, feel food in, yet still protects me from the elements.

My friend Megan is also styling this cute gingham shirt dress on her blog. Since she’s taller than me, she’s rocking it as a tunic! See how she styled it on her blog, Diary of this Girl!

How do you dress for the rainy weather? Do you have any tricks for combatting the rainy day blues? I’d love to hear how you deal with rain in the comments!

Huuuge fan of my Ilse Jabobsen rainboots. They remind me a bit of yours with a little bit of added edge to them rather than a more traditional style! Cute outfit!!
